Saturday Brunch at Miliki

My family and I discovered Miliki’s brunch on accident, but it was a good accident to have.

Miliki is a Nigerian restaurant in the Laurel district of Oakland. They started serving American brunch prepared by the chef from Full House Cafe, which was a long time favorite breakfast spot that closed earlier last year and became Sequoia Diner.

We decided to go out for brunch on Saturday and wanted to try a new place in Oakland that we’d never tried before. So we drove to Laurel and arrived at Sequoia Diner to find that there was a 30 min wait. I put my name on the list, and we started to wander around the area to see what else was nearby. Next door was this Nigerian restaurant, Miliki, which had a sign outdoors saying that they now serve American brunch. It looked dark and not many people were inside, but we decided to give it a shot since we were very hungry.

I ordered a crab, mushroom, and avocado benedict. I asked for the hollandaise sauce on the side, as I usually find that the hollandaise flavor is so strong that it overpowers everything else. There were large chunks of tasty crab that paired well with the mushrooms, but I wish I ordered just a plain crab benedict so I could get the full crab flavor. The avocado was nice and fresh, but it overpowered the crab flavor for me. I love poached eggs, and this one was nice and runny when I broke into it. I dipped my fork into the hollandaise and found the sauce to be lighter than the usual hollandaise, but I actually liked it that way.

Their home fries were nicely cooked Yukon gold potatoes with onions and other seasoning. My mom usually doesn’t eat the side hash or potatoes that come with a meal, but she tried these potatoes and loved them so much that she packed the remainder to go for eating later on in the day.

The one must have of this restaurant is their biscuits. Their biscuits have herbs and black pepper and come out flaky and fresh with the perfect density.

I’m now curious about what Nigerian food is, so I will have to try this place again sometime for dinner.
