Smitten Ice Cream is not your typical ice cream shop. All of their ice cream is made-to-order — with liquid nitrogen.
My husband is a huge fan of dessert, especially ice cream. He also is a science nerd. So it was no surprise when he said he wanted to come to Smitten Ice Cream after lunch. We went to the one at Rockridge in Oakland, but there are also a few more shops around the Bay Area as well.
We walked in to see a line of machines at the counter where ice cream was being made. Since there were three of us, we each got three different flavors.
Cookie Dough with Pretzels & Chocolate Chips: Smooth, creamy vanilla ice cream with huge chunks of cookie dough. Yes please.
Tcho 60.5% Chocolate: Definitely can’t go wrong with chocolate, especially when it’s dark chocolate from Tcho. This had a very strong chocolate flavor – I don’t know if milk chocolate fans will like it since it tastes more like chocolate than sugar, but as a dark chocolate fan, I enjoyed this one.
Seasonal special — Crème Fraiche with Pear Caramel: This was my favorite of the three. The ice cream itself had such a unique flavor — the best comparison I can think of is a light cheesecake ice cream. The pear caramel was divine. I don’t normally care for caramel because it is usually super thick and super sugary sweet, but this was neither of those. The caramel was more like a light sauce, and the pear flavor blended with the light caramel taste very well.
I look for bold flavors rather than sugar sweetness and this had some fantastic flavors. All of their ice creams were super smooth and creamy — in case we didn’t see them making the ice cream in front of us, we could definitely tell from the taste and texture alone that the ice cream was freshly made and was not sitting in a freezer for an excessive amount of time.
Watching them make the ice cream was fascinating. All they did was place the mixture into the bowl and stuck it into the machine for mixing, but man was there a lot of smoke coming out of those things!
Smitten definitely has some of the better ice cream I’ve had, and I am looking forward to going back and trying more of their flavors. In fact, I may even go for the ice cream flight option next time!
